Electro Static Discharge (ESD) is when electricity flows between two electrically charged objects. It is caused by contact, an electrical short, or dielectric breakdown. A buildup of static electricity can be caused by electrostatic induction. Small static charges around us can easily build up into high voltages – unless they are earthed. High static damages electrical equipment and it can be dangerous to you: eg. when it causes an electric arc.
Most safety footwear these days is antistatic, .....but NOT Electro Static Discharging (ESD).
ESD footwear is the safest footwear where there is a need to quickly ground or discharge the electric static to the earth.
Our ESD shoes and boots comply with EN 61340 standard. This ESD standard ensures that the electrical resistance is only between 0.75Mega Ohm and 35Mega Ohm.
ESD footwear is used in cleanrooms, computer labs and other areas where a build of charge is likely and can cause injury to the person or electrical damage to computer hardware or memory. (NB 90% of static damage is initially undetected!: ie the electrical damage is done in a way that only become fully evident later! . This can cause the damage to be far more costly to you / your customer).
ESD safety boots are also known as Static Dissipating Boots.
The purpose of ESD boots is to ground any build up of charge before it can shock you or a sensitive computer system.
